It’s November 2020 and despite a deadly global pandemic, one young family decides to risk it all and travel from their home in Colorado across the country to celebrate Thanksgiving with the in-laws. But when they arrive, not even six feet of social distancing can keep them from having a close encounter of the third kind.
Last Thanksgiving my family and I braved the pandemic and traveled across the country to visit my in-laws. I made a movie about the experience filled with catharsis, hot takes on 2020, UFOS, and a few bees.
I made up Save the Bees as I went along. My nephew Carter helped me with the storyline when I arrived in Virginia and suggested the bee part. Recording my trip was a way to process my fears of traveling across the United States at the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. I captured the majority of the movie with my phone much like Coronut. Most scenes were improvised in one take; blurring the lines between family home videos, captured at a poignant time in our planet’s history; pop culture, and existential sci-fi.
